Walter Gieseking In The Movies

Some wonderful and quite fascinating pianism here: Walter Gieseking playing a portion of the Tchaikovsky Concerto and the final minutes of Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata, taken from a 1948 German movie.

Gieseking provided the ample piano excerpts in the 1948 movie entitled Finale – https://second.wiki/wiki/finale_1948 – the entire film being fully watchable here (if it doesn’t get taken down at some point):

The great collector Ernst Lumpe has uploaded the audio-only portions from the Tchaikovsky and the Beethoven into the audio link shared below and it makes for fascinating listening. Gieseking takes most the concerto at a broader pace than one might expect (though he ramps things up partway through), giving a performance that is exquisitely nuanced, with his beautiful tone evident throughout. The Beethoven is frenetic to say the least, though still rhythmically and technically secure …. terrifically exciting!
